Debate over what should comprise the characteristics of a good artiste remains a subject of much controversy even today. I will stick to the arena of models and actors in this blog. Pretty face, magical eyes, scintillating smile were some of the much desired aspects for the entertainment industry at some point of time. Even today I come across many people who think it is mandatory to have a beautiful face for appealing to the audience. But, what is being beautiful? Good looks and beauty are terms that can't be restrained within certain limits. We all have our individual perception about who can be called beautiful. I personally feel, an artiste creates an aura of fantasy for the audience, so the biggest quality that should be present among them is the ability to captivate and enchant the mind of the audience. Intelligence, sensuous appeal, charisma are certainly some of the best aspects required of any artiste. Moreover, the kind of entertainment works that are being made now deserves more of brainy work than solely focus on a pretty face and nothing else.
I find this perception of overemphasis on beautiful faces baseless. If I analyze my own looks, I don't mind in admitting that I do not fit into the definition of a beautiful face. But, when I chose to get into modelling and acting, what I had with me was abundant confidence, hard work and my own introspection about my positive and negative aspects. This helped me in channelizing my energies on the kind of work that I do. But, of course I do not limit myself to specific kind of work all the time. Always try to be as versatile as possible. I am grateful to the audience for the appreciation that they have been giving me since day one.
The reason why I took up this topic is many newcomers in this industry have asked me whether being beautiful or handsome is all that is required for an artiste's success. I always try to explain them that it is more about performance, ones dedication towards their work and immense willpower that ultimately leads to success. Being open to criticism is always good as it helps one to improve and work on the weaker points. But, I have seen many judgmental brigades who seem to be passing verdicts about what works and what doesn't. Besides, a beautiful face devoid of a beautiful soul doesn't make any sense. Does it?
